Rev. Raymond Hayes, 68, formerly of Newnan, passed away at his residence in Gay, Georgia on January 7, 2019 with his family by his side. Raymond was born in Newnan on February 15, 1950 to the late Hiram Luther Hayes and Christine Costley Hayes. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sisters, Sue Haynes and Mary Jean Yohman; brother, Tony Hayes.
Raymond was a Minister of the Gospel, having served as the associate pastor of Open Door Baptist Church for 13 years when Rev. Henry Calhoun was the pastor. He also preached on WNEA radio station for many years. Raymond loved his Savior and enjoyed singing also. In addition to the ministry, he was a welder by trade last working for M.A. Engineering. Alabama football, deer hunting, coon hunting and bear hunting was some favorite past times. He also served proudly in the United States Army during Vietnam receiving several honorable medals including Sharpshooter. Raymond was devoted to his family, was an amazing husband, father and grandfather. He also had a number of nieces and nephews that he loved very much.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Barbara Calhoun Hayes; daughters, Judy Chappelle of Newnan, Chasity McClendon (Michael) of Moreland; brothers, Ronnie and Rickey Hayes; sister, Sheena Knott. Also surviving are grandchildren, Alyssa McClendon, Alexis Chappelle, Austin McClendon; several God-children.
The funeral service will be at 1 p.m., on Friday, January 11, 2019 at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel with Dr. David Couch and Pastor Gary Farlow officiating and the interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m.
